The first time Saturday Night Live did their sketch for the Underground Music Festival, it was hysterical. Openly mocking Insane Clown Posse’s Gathering of the Juggalos was an easy target, but there were so many one-liners, that it hit way more than it missed. It’s been back several times since, and made its first appearance in 2012 with a political version. “Donkey Punch the Ballot,” sadly, is nowhere near as funny as the first two, but it’s still got some pretty good moments, like a band playing called “Todd Akin and the Legitimate Rapes,” and “A re-enactment of the Lincoln-Douglas debate with Linkin Park and Buster Douglas.” For the most part, thought, SNL is trying to shoehorn political commentary into the now-familiar format of a Gathering commercial, to diminishing returns. Not to mention, Insane Clown Posse fans could be called a lot of things, but “political” isn’t one of the first things to come to mind. At any rate, it’s still better than most of what’s on the show these days. R.I.P. Ass Dan.
