It might be hard to believe, but Metallica’s infamous self-titled album, aka The Black Album, turned 20 years old earlier this month. And to celebrate, the German edition of Metal Hammer Magazine has put together a tribute CD being made available with the September 2011 issue. This special tribute features renditions of songs off of The Black Album recorded by Lemmy Kilmister, Devildriver, Doro, Sodom, ICS Vortex, Finntroll and many others.

And thanks to Metal Hammer, we can hear samples of three renditions appearing on the tribute. Go ahead and listen to snippets of Devildriver covering “Holier Than Thou,” ICS Vortex covering “Don’t Tread On Me” and Callejon covering “Wherever I May Roam” in the player below or via Metal Hammer’s Soundcloud.

In other related news, more details about Metallica’s collaborative album with Lou Reed, now called Lulu, have been revealed. We can’t wait till Metal Hammer does a tribute CD to that album.
