Rammstein has gone orbital.
On Wednesday, drummer Christoph Schneider revealed via social media that the band had the opportunity to premiere a song from their upcoming album for European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Thomas Pesquet, who is currently stationed at the International Space Station (ISS).
“Space is calling!,” wrote Schneider. “I had the honor to speak with ISS astronaut @thom_astro on behalf of @rammsteinofficial. He is the current commander of the @iss and living in space since half a year. It felt like a childs dream coming true for me – talking to a person living in the sky, sharing a glimpse of his view, realizing again how small we all are compared to the depth of the universe…”
He continued, “He was the first to listen to one of our new songs from the upcoming album. It premiered in the sky, which is an honor for us. Thank you @nasa @europeanspaceagency and Thomas for this unique experience.”
Pesquet is one of 11 astronauts currently stationed at the ISS. The others include NASA’s (National Aeronautics and Space Administration, US) Megan McArthur, Mark Vande Hei, Shane Kimbrough, Mike Hopkins, Shannon Walker and Victor Glover; JAXA’s (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) Soichi Noguchi and Akihiko Hoshide, and Russian cosmonauts Oleg Novitskiy and Pyotr Dubrov.
Rumors that Rammstein were recording a new album started swirling in fall 2020 when the band was spotted near La Fabrique studios in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Those rumors were confirmed by the band in October 2020 after posting a photo of themselves in the studio together. In March, keyboardist Christian “Flake” Lorenz confirmed that the band had been working on new music.
Rammstein announced in May that they would be heading to North America in 2022 for a short headlining tour. Those dates start August 21 in Montreal, QC, run through cities in Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Illinois, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Texas and California, and ends October 1, 2 & 4 with three dates in Mexico City, MX. Those dates are preceded by a 2022 European tour from May through August. Tickets for all dates can be found here.
