Metal By Numbers is a weekly column in which we look at the top metal sellers and debuts of the week.

You can’t really talk about the new As I Lay Dying album without talking about the gargantuan elephant in the room. I remember when the news of Tim Lambesis’ arrest broke. I’d only been writing for Metal Insider for a few months and it was one of the first shocking news stories that I watched play out in the metal news scene. For years after, I’d pretty much written off As I Lay Dying as I’m sure many other people did. Now the band is back with the same lineup from seven years ago and it’s…weird. It just is. Look, musicians doing shitty things and making a comeback is a thing that happens. Hell, even if they don’t make a real comeback but people still love their music, I get it. And if you’re happy As I Lay Dying are back and you like the new album and you’re thrilled they’re this week’s top metal debut, that’s great and I’m happy for you. It’s just weird to me.
