Youtube personality Jared Dines, in preparation for an upcoming video titled “Djent 2017,” recently custom ordered a 17-string guitar for use in the video. That may have been news on its own, but it’s recently come to light that the so-called luthier, Nicholas Olson of Olson Guitarworks, is actually a known scammer who passes off cheap Chinese-made guitars as his own work.
Dines made an arrangement with Olson to have a guitar made in exchange for $1000 and promotion on his various social media pages, only to have the delivery delayed and hundreds more dollars asked for on top of that. After some investigating, it was found that Chinese company Musoo Guitars makes an identical model and was the original creator of the images that Olson attempted to pass off as examples of his work. To add insult to injury, the Musoo Guitars model retails for $400, meaning that Olson pocketed almost a thousand dollars of Dines’s money and has already capitalized on his name in self-promotional posts.
Olson Guitarworks has since disappeared from social media and Dines has yet to receive any guitar, custom-made or no. He is currently looking for someone else to craft the 17-string guitar for him so he can create the “Djent 2017” video before year’s end.
