Remember independent record stores? There’s not that many left, but California chain Amoeba Music is one of the great ones, and they’re still flourishing. One of the things that keeps them vital is that they promote themselves, like their “What’s In My Bag?” series, in which musicians pick out music, books, and more from the store and explain what they picked and why. The latest musician they got to do so was Metallica’s Lars Ulrich, who is definitely a big music fan, but picks more books and DVDs than music.
Presumably shot last year, the segment finds Ulrich doing some holiday shopiing. Ulrich’s first pick isn’t an album at all, but Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run book. He keeps the trend going by picking up a Charles Bukowski book for his wife for Christmas. Then he picks a pair of John Woo DVDs and some Christmas cards. He also grabs Lords of Chaos, the book about the roots of Norwegian black metal that his friend Jonas Akerlund is directing a film version of, and a DVD from another Lars, Von Trier
Lars also picks some music, starting with Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool, and says that his wife’s appreciation for the band got him into it.Picks from The Beatles, the Stones and Deep Purple are also among his picks. You can see the whole clip below.
