The biggest-selling rock/metal album of the past week is Prophets of Rage’s The Party’s Over, proving that there’s an appetite for Rage Against the Machine’s message. However, for all their technical proficiency, not to mention the more than capable skills of Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Cypress Hill’s B Real, Prophets of Rage fall a little flat not because of what they have, but because of what they don’t: Rage singer Zack de la Rocha. It’s been seventeen years since the band’s last original album (and 16 since their covers album Renegades) and while the rest of Rage have kept themselves busy as Audioslave and drumming for Black Sabbath in the time off, we haven’t heard much from their singer. He popped up on a Run the Jewels track a few years ago, however, which turned out to be a pretty good indicator of what he’s up to next.

This morning without warning, a new Zack de la Rocha track, apparently the first one from a forthcoming solo album, was released. “Digging for Windows” was produced by Run the Jewels’ El P, and it’s definitely legit. It’s rap, not rock, but still manages to be heavier than Prophets of Rage, likely because it’s a lot more authentic. There’s not much more information, even from the press release, other than that the track is taken from a forthcoming solo album. It is, however, available for free download via Soundcloud.
