This djent stuff has the kids abuzz. To me, it’s mostly rehashed and polished-up Meshuggah soundalikes that would make great soundtracks to someone falling down the stairs – technical for technicality’s sake. But hey, nothing is perfect. It’s groovy and technical, and that’s all people want sometimes. That’s fine. Falling-down-the-stairs pioneers Periphery have a new album (out July 22 via Sumerian Records), Periphery III: Select Difficulty.
Fortunately, their latest track “The Price is Wrong” is a step in the right direction. It streamlines (most of) the nonsense and doesn’t sound like someone tumbling an infinite stairwell. They almost get around to a Lamb of God or Slipknot-esque sort of radio metal sound which makes it easy to digest, but it’s not so formulaic that it sounds like they wrote this one using a deck of cards or dice.
The vocals are voracious, as evidenced by a nice “ERRGHH YEAHHH” (thanks, lyric video), matching the intensity and beefiness of the track. See for yourself:
