File under “fantastic news for next year:” Devin Townsend revealed over the weekend via Twitter that he’s recording vocals for a new Steve Vai song.

This is a pretty exciting turn of events, since Townsend got his start as Vai’s protege back in 1993, singing on his Sex and Religion record before striking out on his own with Strapping Young Lad and eventually the Devin Townsend Project we’ve come to know and Love. (It’s a way of feeling) Vai most recently announced that he was working on a 25th anniversary remastering of his second solo record, 1990’s Passion and Warfare, which will reportedly contain material that was written in the period between that album and his first, 1984’s Flex-Able.

It doesn’t seem like there’s much in the way of things to read between the lines here; Vai’s early years had a revolving door of vocalists (the first two records in particular had quite a few between them) before he dedicated his work to full-on instrumental music, so the impression we’re getting is that we shouldn’t expect a full-on collaboration for the “new” material. But, one new Steve Vai song with Devin Townsend on it is better than none.
