Nirvana’s “Sappy” is well-known to most Nirvana fans, even if it never officially appeared on any of their albums. The track, recorded during the In Utero sessions by Steve Albini in early 1993, appeared as an unlisted bonus track on the No Alternative compilation later that year (technically, it was titled “Verse Chorus Verse,” but there was another song called that). Now, as part of the soundtrack of the DVD/Blu-ray release of Kurt Cobain’s documentary Montage of Heck, a demo version Kurt recorded in 1988 can now be heard. Even though the sound fidelity has been cleared up, the audio quality is raw, with only Cobain’s vocals and a guitar, with Cobain singing in a lower register than we’re used to.

The “Sappy” demo will appear on Kurt Cobain – Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings, a companion piece to the HBO documentary. It will features 13 songs, including his cover of The Beatles’ “And I Love Her.”  A double-LP version of the soundtrack will features 31 tracks and there’s also a super-deluxe version that will features the 2-LP version of CD and cassette, a book, a puzle, a movie poster, postcards and a bookmark, along with almost an hour of additional interviews. It won’t come cheap though. Check out Nirvana’s version of the song below:
