When you think of the relatively small body of work of late guitarist Randy Rhoads, “Mr. Crowley” stands out as one of his many shining moments. With Rhoads getting his due with a March 3 album, Immortal Randy Rhoads – The Ultimate Tribute, an impressive lineup of artists have signed on to pay homage to the guitarist, who dies at the age of 25 in a plane crash in 1982. You’ve already heard Serj Tankian take on“Crazy Train” along with Tom Morello. Today, LA Weekly debuted the album’s version of “Mr. Crowley.”
It’s a pretty unique lineup for this version. Testament’s Chuck Billy handles vocals, with Children of Bodom frontman Alexi Laiho playing guitar. They’re joined by bassist Rudy Sarzo, who played in Quiet Riot with Rhoads, drummer Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath) and Randy’s brother Kelle Rhoads on keyboards. It’s pretty odd hearing Ozzy’s trademark vocals replaced by Billy’s growl, but the soul of the song remains.
