04) Sum 41

On May 8th, 2023, exactly twenty-two years after Sum 41’s debut album, All Killer No Filler was released, the band decided to call it quits. The post soon-followed their current plan before officially closing the door, with their forthcoming eighth, final, and double album, Heaven :x: Hell, now expected to arrive in the spring of 2024, along with a slew of tour and festival dates.

The initial statement last spring came from frontman Deryck Whibley’s Instagram, with the following :

“Being in Sum 41 since 1996 brought us some of the best moments of our lives. We are forever grateful to our fans both old and new, who have supported us in every way. It is hard to articulate the love and respect we have for all of you and we wanted you to hear this from us first. Sum 41 will be disbanding. We will still be finishing all of our current upcoming tour dates this year, and we’re looking forward to releasing our final album “Heaven :x: Hell,” along with a final worldwide headlining tour to celebrate. Details will be announced as soon as we have them.  For now, we look forward to seeing all of you skumfuks on the road and are excited for what the future will bring for each of us. “

Most recently Whibley explained to Canada’s CJAY92 on why the band was coming to an end, stating:

“I’m a big believer in that the music tells you what to do, and it just told me this should be a double album. Once that album was finished, I’d realized, and I’d been thinking this for a while, that I felt like after all these years with my 1,000 percent focus on Sum 41 all day, every day, I felt like I don’t have much more of that in me to continue past this record. I’ve been in this band since I was in tenth grade, and I just… I’m getting to a point where I’m thinking, I’d like to put some focus and energy into something else. And I felt this is probably the best record we’ve ever made. And I think this version of the band is the best we’ve ever been live. And I thought, what a way to just go out on this one.”

Sum41 have since released a video for the single “Landmines,” via Rise Records, and the record will likely be released in two parts, first one being Heaven, more on the pop-punk side of their career, and Hell, their heavier style. With a double album along the way and a ton of touring dates, it’s not fully clear as to exactly when the final show will be. Only time will tell.
