While we live in a world that’s increasingly turning to streaming, there are still a lot of people buying music. Granted, it’s less and less every year (except for maybe vinyl), but there are still some bands that continue to sell CDs and MP3s. Take, for example, Metallica. While the Black Album is the biggest-selling album of the SoundScan era (over 16 million and counting), it only sold 2,500 copies this week. That’s still a ridiculous amount for an album that’s almost 25 years old (feel old?).
But what’s even more surprising is that Master of Puppets sold over 1,500 copies more than the Black Album did, selling 4,000 copies. It’s the 83rd biggest-selling album of this past week, selling more than the Frozen soundtrack, Madonna’s latest album, and even other perennial favorites like Bob Marley’s Legend and Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. In fact, both albums are among the biggest-selling albums in 2015 so far, each having sold 43,000 copies. While Master is outpacing the Black Album this week, it has a long way to go to catch up. It’s only sold 4.9 million to Black‘s 16.1 million. Either way, there’s a lot of people still picking up Metallica music, which probably isn’t making them care all that much about finishing up the follow-up to Death Magnetic.
