Portishead and Gonga aren’t two band names you often read on this site, much less together, mostly because the former is a seminal trip hop group and the latter is a little known doom/stoner band. So, why are we talking about them now? Because Portishead vocalist Beth Gibbons teamed up with the trio for Record Store Day to a cover the song that started metall: “Black Sabbath” by Black Sabbath. It’s a great cover, as heavy and creepy as it should be thanks in particular to Gibbons’ spot on and chilly vocals. Also, the video for the song features footage from the 1963 film Black Sabbath, so that’s pretty cool.
