Just over two years ago, the metal community suffered a sudden loss when SiriusXM Liquid Metal host and musician Mario Comesanas passed away from a rare form of leukemia at the age of 30. And while it was a loss felt on a national scale, due to his popularity on SXM and a stint at Revolver magazine that put him on the road with the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, it hit particularly hard in the New York area.  Mario was a familiar presence both at shows and in his bands, and he’d begun his broadcasting career at nearby South Orange college radio station WSOU, one of the few full-time metal radio stations in the country. It’s because of his time there that thisember.org, which aims to launch an endowed scholarship for a junior or senior communications major at Seton Hall University, has been established.

Next Saturday (13), there will be a fundraiser for the scholarship in Jersey City, NJ at 9th and Coles Tavern. Tickets will be $25 at the door, with all proceeds going towards the scholarship. There will be raffles, a 50/50 and food and drinks. It’s a fitting cause for Comesanas, who’s positivity and drive as a metal fan and college radio host got him where he was in the music industry. While Metal Insider will be representing, those not in the area can still donate via thisember.org.
