Metal Insider’s Top 5 is a column where we count down the top five of…well basically anything.
Drinking and metal have gone hand in hand since before Steppenwolf coined the term “heavy metal” in “Born to be Wild.” There’s nothing like putting on something heavy and downing some adult beverages of your choice while doing so. And while there’s plenty of music to drink to, we wanted a list of songs specifically about drinking (or in the case of Carnivore, what happens after it). We also wanted the help of our readers, offering one person a signed Unearth beer bong as a prize for submitting the #1 metal drinking song. So grab your drink of choice and join us in this toast to songs about getting toasted.
5. Carnivore’s “Jack Daniels And Pizza”

Peter Steele had a wry sense of humor since well before he was in Type O Negative. You can tell from the title that the combination of Jack and pizza won’t go so well, and this is a cautionary tale caught on tape.
4. Clutch’s “Drink To The Dead”

This is a bit more sobering than party-worthy, but it’s a pretty great tune nonetheless. The album closer from 2001’s Pure Rock Fury (not counting a hidden track) is a classic Irish-esque drinking song that could almost be by the Pogues if the guitars weren’t as distorted. “Drink to the dead all you still alive, we shall join them in good time” is not only a great chorus, but a song worthy of being played at a funeral. Well, at mine (Bram) anyway.
3. Pantera’s “Goddamn Electric”

A lot of people suggested various Pantera songs. However, we’re going with this particular track (off of 2000’s Reinventing The Steel) because of the line “your truth is in whiskey and weed and Black Sabbath.” Those three ingredients make for a great party.
2. Tankard “For A Thousand Beers”

We received a lot of submissions for Tankard, but the following in depth explanation from reader Churro_dude_666 made us choose this song: The acoustic bit at the start makes me want a beer (00:00 – 00:32). The bit after is about going to get another beer(00:35 – 01:39). The heavy bit makes you knock into stuff, since you’d already be on your 9th beer by this point (01:39 – 02:25). The heavier bit after displays the feelings of falling down the stairs drunk, and getting up for another beer a couple of minutes later (02:26 – 04:21). The solo makes you think of getting a 2nd wind, and therefore going to get another 4 beers (04:22 – 04:53). The heavy bit after is you feeling nauseous and dizzy from the alcohol and throwing up everywhere (04:54 – 07:14), and the final bit portrays the feeling of doing it all again the next day (07:15 – 07:24).
1. Psychostick’s “BEER!”

A lot of people submitted the humorcore group’s tribute to beer as the best metal drinking song. However, reader hogiebuns04’s reasoning explains it best: “The song says it all, the entire lyrical premise is just about getting wasted from beer. The song is lyrically so easy its humorous which makes it awesome because you’ll never forget them even after a case. However, the metal behind the words just makes you want to start moshing!” So congrats hogiebuns04, you’ve won an autographed Unearth beer bong!
