The funeral service for the late AC/DC guitarist Malcolm Young was held today (28th) at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney, Australia. Family, friends, and former bandmates including Brian Johnson and Cliff Williams along with former AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd and ex-bassist Mark Evans were in attendance. According to ABC, Malcolm’s Gretsch guitar known as “The Beast” was placed on top of his coffin during the service. Angus Young, who co-founded the band with his brother in 1973 was seen carrying “The Beast” out to the hearse while his brother’s coffin was loading inside.
Malcolm’s family did not speak publicly during the service, however, there was a written statement in the program thanking everyone for their support:
“Malcom’s family thank you for your love, support and overwhelming outpouring of kindness during this time. They ask that you remember Malcolm as a man who was generous and had immense talent. His enormous legacy to his family and the music industry worldwide will never be forgotten.”
Hundreds of mourning fans gathered around outside the church. Following the service, a pipe band performed a medley of songs including “Waltzing Matilda” and AC/DC’s “It’s A Long Way To the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)” as the procession was exiting the cathedral.
Malcolm Young was suffering from a series of health issues including a longtime battle with dementia. He passed away on November 18th with his family at his bedside at the age of 64. Photos from today’s service can be found here.
