While punk may have sold out to the highest bidder long ago, veterans of the scene like Rancid (who in turn formed from the ashes of ’80s punk band Operation Ivy), still have the energy and attitude. Dropkick Murphys, another band that’s been around for over 20 years, also have cred, even if “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” is a legitimate anthem. The two bands have joined forces for a tour, which also features Jersey faves Bouncing Soles, and played Asbury Park this paset Friday (4). Rancid and Dropkick joined forces for an encore that featured a quartet of covers, taking on Ramones (“Cretin Hop”), Cock Sparrer (Take ’em All”), Johnny Cash (“Folsom Prison Blues”) and Sham 69 (“If the Kids Are United”).  Metal Insider contributing photographer Melinda Oswandel captured the evening for us.
