According to CNN, Chris Cornell’s funeral is going to be held on Friday (26) in Los Angeles. They cite two people with knowledge of his funeral plans. His body will be flown from Detroit to L.A. today, and he’ll be buried at the Hollywood Forever cemetery. One of the sources said that the family is thinking about a public memorial for fans, but are “coping now with their loss and the funeral service.”
Meanwhile, some of those in Soundgarden’s inner circle are breaking their silence. Drummer Matt Cameron, who was the band’s drummer in addition to playing for Pearl Jam, was the first member of the band to say anything, stating on Facebook, “My dark knight is gone. Thank you for the incredible outpouring of kindness and love.”
Cameron’s Pearl Jam bandmate, guitarist Mike McCready, spoke about the singer to the Seattle Times:
“Chris Cornell painted in song the darkness and beauty of life in Seattle. Chris means a lot to me today, as he trusted me to play on Temple. He handed me a dream in getting to actually play on beautiful songs. Informed how I would play on Pearl Jam records in the future, I believe. Gave me the break into the music business I’d wanted since I was 11. He was a friend I will miss. I miss you, brother.”
Meanwhile, musical tributes continue to roll in. The Pretty Reckless, who were opening for Soundgarden the night Cornell died, played the last scheduled date on their tour in Detroit the night he took his life. Playing Philadelphia radio station WMMR’s “MMR-BQ” in Camden, NJ last night, the band did an acoustic cover of Audioslave’s “Like a Stone,” which they’ve done in the past, but it took on an entirely new meaning yesterday.
And Corey Taylor was joined by his Stone Sour bandmate Christian Martucci to play Temple of the Dog’s “Hunger Strike” at Rock on the Range on Friday, and Live, playing just their second show since reuniting with singer Ed Kowalczyk, played an acoustic cover of Audioslave’s “Like a Highway” at Rock on the Range.
