The feature length film by Metallica, Through The Never, wasn’t a rousing success. After spending over $30 million of their money to make the film, the 2012 flick only made a little over $3 million in four weeks at the box office.
Hetfield quipped in their Metallica club magazine about losing their own money in the deal, rather than taking investment cashc:
“Someone’s money becomes an opinion. When someone else is investing, they have the space to come in and say, ‘Hey, I think this could do this.’ All our careers, we’ve pushed people away who tell us what to do as artists. I don’t know if a producer putting his money into it would have brought something else that we might have needed – but I know that we made the right decision to not let anybody fuck with it. We’re paying the price for that. So be it.”
Metallica have certainly been doing their own thing (remember Lulu?), and all these extra projects are partly to blame for the delay in a new album. It’s been since 2008’s Death Magnetic since a new Metallica album, but at least we know they’ve been in the studio recently.
