Quick answer, no, but we’ll entertain the thought. For the last few days posters have been popping up around London with a mysterious-looking, but colorful artwork claiming something was coming on December 4. Obsessive Coldplay fans noticed that singer Chris Martin wore a shirt with the same design when he played the Global Citizen Festival in New York City. Yesterday, via Twitter, the band confirmed that yes, indeed, the artwork was theirs, but even before then, Bring me the Horizon’s Oli Sykes tweeted that they were “jacking their steez” from their album, Sempiternal.
So did Coldplay rip off Bring Me the Horizon? Maybe tangentially, but both of them ripped off Spirograph. And that 50 year-old children’s board game rips off the flower of life symbol, which has been around for longer than either band or Spirograph. So did Coldplay rip off Bring me the Horizon? Maybe only their marketing plan, in that both album rollouts included mysterious artwork that first started popping up in UK subways. Bring me the Horizon’s That’s The Spirit was initially teased by umbrella imagery.
