Brooklyn is no stranger to trends, trend pieces or metal. Every now and then, the three combine. for something that’s either awesome, a head-desk moment, or a combination of the two. We’re talking about a borough where there was a black metal tasting menu, for the love of satan. Brooklyn’s St. Vitus was the place where MTV’s Guy Code Blog went to pick up metal chicks. And now, courtesy of Noisey, we know that there’s a heavy metal spin class in Brooklyn as well.
Wyatt Marshall, no coincidentally the same person that profiled the tasting menu, took in a spin class. Hosted in a basement by female instructor Halston Bruce at Williamsburg’s SYNCStudio, the class featured a playlist that included, well, nothing you’d normally hear at a spin class. Against a grimly lit room (dark, with blood red lighting), 15 people, some of them wearing metal shirts, showed up to bike to Iron Maiden, Bolt Thrower, Carcass, and a bunch of other jams that would make you want to bike faster. Much like any workout, the playlist started off pretty light and gained in intensity. It’d be tough to call Led Zeppelin metal, but by the time Bolt Thrower was on seven songs later, it sounds like everyone there was sweating too much to complain.Hey, if you’re going to work out, you might as well do it to good music, and while we haven’t taken a spin class before, this one might we worth a shot. The next one, on August 17th, promises to have the theme “Metallica vs. Slayer.”
