Metal By Numbers 8/4: Anything But A Nightmare For A7X

Posted by on August 4, 2010

Metal By Numbers is a weekly column in which we look at the top metal sellers and debuts of the week.

It was reported last week that this would be the case, and we even discussed it further in our new column Headbangers’ Brawl. But now it’s official: Avenged Sevenfold has the #1 album in the country! Not the top metal debut of the week, but the top album period. This is such an accomplishment, for not only has a metal band dethroned rap juggernaut Eminem from the top, but because they sold 162,500 copies, almost 50% more than what their previous self-titled album sold in 2007. For any band to even sell around the same that their last album did in today’s climate is amazing, let alone do what A7X did.

Notable Debuts:
Avenged Sevenfold, Nightmare (Warner Bros.) #1, 162,500 sold
This successful first week must be doubly sweet for a band that has truly gone through a painful year after the death of drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan.

36 Crazyfists, Collisions and Castaways (Ferret) #143, 3,300 sold
A very solid first week for the metalcore Alaskan’s fifth studio album.

Ivoryline, Vessels (Tooth & Nail) 1,500 sold
This band is currently on the Scream It Like You Mean It Tour with Metal By Numbers favorites We Came As Romans (who shockingly were absent this week on the charts for the first time in what feels like forever).

Decrepit Birth, Polarity (Nuclear Blast) 1,300 sold
Their new album came just in time for the Decibel Defiance Tour 2010 announcement.

Cruel Hand, Lock & Key (Bridge Nine) 500 sold
The hardcore Mainers make their presence on the charts slightly known.

Notable Sales:
Korn, Korn III: Remember Who You Are (Roadrunner) #22, 12,800 sold
Korn seems to do a lot cool things on their ModLife page, including live chats and such. Might want to keep an eye on that site to make sure you don’t miss any cool events that may pop up.

Ozzy Osbourne, Scream (Epic) #37, 10,000 sold
The Prince of Darkness said recently in an interview that he’d love to create a supergroup so that he could record different types of music, like blues. If you could choose, who would you want to see Ozzy in a supergroup with?

Godsmack, Oracle (Universal) #48, 8,000 sold
To think, it’s been 13 weeks since we talked about this album hitting #1 in its first week on the charts. With all that time gone by, though, they still remain in the top 50.

Hellyeah, Stampede (Epic) #55, 7,300 sold
A 28% decrease in their sophomore album’s third week, but as long as strippers need songs to dance to, this album will do just fine.

Five Finger Death Punch, War Is The Answer (Prospect Park) #65, 6,300 sold
A 16% increase sees them jumping 15 spots up the charts.

AC/DC, AC/DC: Iron Man 2 (Columbia) #71, 6,100 sold
How much you want to bet that a new live album from AC/DC would do just as great as this compilation?

Black Veil Brides, We Stitch These Wounds (Standby) #94, 4,900 sold
A 54% drop in sales doesn’t take away the fact that these guys had a great debut last week.

Bullet For My Valentine, Fever (Jive) #102, 4,600 sold
The band just announced dates for a Fall tour. Will the crab girl be there? Guess you’ll have to go and find out for yourself.

Motley Crue, Greatest Hits (Motley Records) #111, 4,200 sold
You know what? Rather than rant about this being on the charts (again!?), let’s have some fun. Leave a comment saying which Motley Crue songs you think are missing from this collection.

Bret Michaels, Custom Built (Poor Boy) #114, 4,000 sold
So I guess the Poison frontman is no longer in consideration to replace Simon?

Deftones, Diamond Eyes (Reprise) #147, 3,200 sold
Up 1% from last week.

In This Moment, A Star-Crossed Wasteland (Century Media) #160, 3,000 sold
Not only can you get the band’s new album for just $7.99 on Amazon this week, but also their sophomore album The Dream on Amazon for just $5!

The Acacia Strain, Wormwood (Prosthetic) #165, 2,900 sold
Just like with Black Veil Brides, The Acacia Strain experience a 54% decrease in their second week. It’s probably the ONLY thing the two bands have in common.

Attack Attack!, Attack Attack! (Rise) #185, 2,500 sold
I thought the impossible had happened. I thought that after a week missing from the charts that Attack Attack! had finally fallen off! …Silly, silly me.

Pierce The Veil, Selfish Machines (Equal Vision), 980 sold
Ok, this band keeps doing new contests. Just take a look for yourselves.

3 Inches Of Blood, Here Waits Thy Doom: Deluxe Edition (Century Media) 900 sold
Fellow Mayhem Fest/Silver Stage performers In This Moment might be slowly slipping down the charts, but 3 Inches Of Blood seems to be rising.

iwrestledabearonce, It’s All Happening (Century Media) 670 sold
The album sees a 155% increase this week. Wait…WHAT?! 155%?

In Fear and Faith, Imperial (Rise) 800 sold
Not to ignore In Fear and Faith, but … a 155% increase?! Damn!

How to Destroy Angels, How to Destroy Angels (The Null Corporation) 620 sold
It doesn’t feature their music, but the trailer for The Social Network (the Facebook movie that Trent is scoring the soundtrack for) looks pretty good.

This or the Apocalypse, Haunt What’s Left (Good Fight) 535 sold
This album keeps disappearing and reappearing on the charts. Well, welcome back!

Kingdom of Sorrow, Behind the Blackest Tears (Relapse) 530 sold
The sludge metal supergroup has sold over 10,000 copies in eight weeks.

Eyes Set To Kill, Broken Frames (Break Silence) 450 sold
Last week, I asked if anyone checked out Eyes Set To Kill at Warped Tour this year. Reader Shadou commented that “Warped Tour on Long Island was the best I’ve seen them yet! They get better every time. Definitely worth seeing if you get the chance.” Thanks for letting me know Shadou!
