Henry Rollins backtracks on suicide article

Posted by on August 25, 2014

Hardcore music veteran and author Henry Rollins caused a bit of a stir with his August 21st LA Weekly column, Fuck Suicide, written in response to the suicide of actor Robin Williams. Williams hung himself on August 11, 2014.

Regarding people who took their own lives, Rollins said:

“When someone commits this act, he or she is out of my analog world. I know they existed, yet they have nullified their existence because they willfully removed themselves from life. They were real but now they are not.”

A day later, he issued an apology on his own website.

“I am deeply sorry. Down to my marrow. I can’t think that means anything to you, but I am. Completely sorry. It is not of my interest to hurt anyone but I know I did.”

Today, LA Weekly published a the promised follow-up article, More Thoughts on Suicide:

I got several letters thanking me for what I said. However, it was the ones that took me to task that made me think the most.

To those I offended, I believe you and I apologize. If what I wrote causes you to toss me out of your boat, it is to my great regret, but I understand and thank you for your thoughts.

Gene Simmons recently sort-of apologized for statements he made in a recent interview, when discussing drugs and alcohol, saying, “for a putz, 20-year-old kid to say, ‘I’m depressed, I live in Seattle.’ Fuck you, then kill yourself.”
